Save the Bridesmaids! (Their Budgets, that is!)

Bridesmaids spend a lot to be part of a wedding. The average bridesmaid spends, according to TheWeddingReport.com is $1,009! That’s a lot of cash…you have to really love the bride to shell out that much.

Which is why I wrote my book Bridesmaid on a Budget — Looking at the national averages of what bridesmaids are spending, and knowing that these can actually be low amounts in some parts of the country, I knew bridesmaids out there wanted their own book to help them save hundreds of dollars without the savings showing.

Here are just some of the average amounts spent in each category:

Bridesmaid dress: $178

Accessories: $52

Alterations: $56

Bachelorette party expenses: $152

Bridal Shower Gift: $72

Hotel (per night): $140

Plane Fare: $303

Wedding Gift: $117

And that national average doesn’t include what each bridesmaid spends on the bridal shower! I hear everything from $100 to $300 per bridesmaid for that pretty party!

Travel’s a big part of this…28% of bridesmaids live in a different state than where the wedding will take place, so that adds up a bunch of travel expenses to attend engagement parties, showers, dress-shopping trips and the wedding weekend, and if the wedding’s a destination one, that’s a big chunk of extra outlay.

So if your bridesmaids could use some help with affording the things you want for your wedding, get them this book! Give a copy to them when you invite them to be in the bridal party. Plan a bridesmaid luncheon early in the process, where everyone will talk about dress styles and other details, and that’s where they get the book in a swag bag. The gracious bride shows that she cares about her bridesmaids and what they’ll be spending…even if the wedding plans aren’t outrageous.

If your bridesmaids have questions, tell them they can write directly to me, or post their questions here in the Comments! Each month, I’ll pick a bridesmaid to win a prize: this month, it’s the Kodak one-time-use camera designed for bachelorette parties, and next month, it’s an Envirosax tote!

“The Wedding Writer” is almost here!

Ooo, I can’t wait for The Wedding Writer to come out! The fabulous Susan Schneider has written a juicy, fabulous new novel based in the world of wedding magazines — and June can’t come soon enough! I’m set to review an advance copy, so I’ll post my review here in a few!

About the novel:

Four talented women, one glossy wedding magazine: life should be as perfect as a bridal catwalk… right?

Lucky Quinn writes up weddings for one of the hottest bridal magazines. And it wasn’t easy to get there. From humble beginnings, she outsmarted her way into the center of New York’s glamorous magazine industry – making up for her background with a sharp mind, whip-thin physique, and ceaseless ambition.

Then, in one day, her life is utterly transformed; two of the magazine’s major competitors fold, and Lucky is named Editor-in-Chief, replacing the formidable, but aging Grace Ralston, who had been at the magazine’s helm from day one. Grace taught Lucky everything she knows, but now it seems that she taught her too well…

As the ripples of Lucky’s promotion spread, the intricate lives of four women begin to unfold. Felice, Your Wedding’s elegant and unshakeable Art Director is now being shaken for the first time by troubles at home. Sara, the Fashion Director, is famed for her eagle eye for fashion trends and exquisite hair. But, for all her know-how, “the Angel of Bridal” has never come close to starring in a wedding herself – she’s picked the dress, but where’s the groom? Grace, recovering in the wake of her sudden, humiliating fall from power, must learn to accept herself – and love – after a life dedicated to fulfilling other women’s dreams. And, through it all, Lucky begins to discover just how lonely the top really is.

Get this book: “Planning Your Wedding Sucks!”

I love my fellow wedding authors. We’re a close bunch here in wedding world…not competitive at all, because we share the same goal — helping you have a great wedding, without any BS or money-wasting. So when Elena Donovan Mauer (who I’ve long admired in her work as editor and fab magazine writer) told me about her new book, I had to get it. And I LOVE it.

Here’s my review that I posted to Amazon:

Elena Donovan Mauer and Joanne Kimes have written a fabulous guide in Planning Your Wedding Sucks! The #1 thing that brides need as they maneuver through all of the tricky spots in wedding planning – those etiquette minefields and temptations to ‘over-do it’ with their wedding elements – is a sense of humor. And Elena and Joanne deliver that perfect mix of essential advice and witty comments that keep the bride’s feet on the ground. All so that their wedding planning won’t suck…for them or for their grooms.

I absolutely love how they get right to the important message: wedding stress can hurt your relationship with the groom. So the tips in this book really do help the bride keep her perspective, and avoid planning mistakes that will surely lead to regret (and wasted money!) One of the most brilliant sections in this book – among the many! – is “10 Questions to Ask Before You DIY,” which will open a bride’s eyes about what’s realistic to take on, and what really should be entrusted to a wedding professional.

I found myself laughing through and loving this book…it’s such a breath of fresh air for any bride who wants to enjoy the wedding planning process. And it’s going to be really appreciated by everyone around the bride, who can also use the fabulous advice within these pages.

Get it here: http://www.adamsmediastore.com/product/planning-your-wedding-sucks/self-help-relationships, and on Amazon, BN.com and wherever books are sold!

And hey, great news: Elena’s promised to share those “10 Questions to Ask Before You DIY” here on my blog coming up soon!
